RPM Diesel Co. can help you find out the reasons your Diesel Generator won’t start or work. Every year that passes we become more and more reliant on a seemingly endless power supply from our grid. The insurance of having a standby power generator on your Boat or business can really protect your investment and make sure weather disruptions or unseen circumstances do not interfere with your bottom line.

Here are a few causes for generator malfunctions that you should be aware of in case you need to troubleshoot a situation where you cannot operate or even turn on your generator. An ounce of prevention is worth a lot more than a pound of cure when it comes to maintaining your generator and having a well maintained backup is like a great insurance policy on your power supply.

The number one cause for generator failure is battery breakdown. The past few years there have been amazing advancements in battery technology the lithium ion versus traditional lead acid batteries. Older batteries become sulfated from the lead plates exposure to air and is the main reason for these generator batteries to break and cause the entire power system to shut down. Sometimes the simplest problem like a corroded connection or untightened wires can be the cause for the generators malfunction.

Wires and any open connections should be maintained on a normal schedule. When the weather is humid outside and it’s wet and rainy you can count on moisture to accumulate on an unsealed unit, just having the proper covers seals and water tight cases can mean the difference in having backup power and not having a secondary power supply system generator.

Fuel Filters and fuel lines should always be checked and the generator should be operated at least every 3 weeks or so to make sure water in the fuel or oxygen in the fuel line does not become an issue. A dirty fuel filter in your generator is just as bad in your car at home keep extra fuel filters and schedule maintenance for changes. The next thing to check is the coolant levels and maximum temp during peak running time.

In the summertime it’s always heat related malfunctions that cause the most problems. If you have observed the generator and witnessed smoking or heard coolant sizzling inside the unit then it’s time to diagnose the coolant system and see if you have an issue inside or outside the cooling system. Dirty radiator fan blades and cracked lines can quickly destroy the functionality of your generator and your ability to have a backup on your power supply.

Dirty gas is another big reason for failure in units that have not been run in a significant time because if the unit is stationary and not running the gas can become stagnant and clog the filters much faster than normal. Having a quiet generator running at top output is everyone’s dream but finding a diesel service and repair shop that is the best in town is not always an easy task that’s why at RPM Diesel Co. we have the parts the technicians and the solutions that will make your maintenance needs easier than ever before.
